I have been toying around with a number of different recovery foods lately. There is one that has stood out above all others: the Tanka Bar. In essence, it’s straight-up protein: buffalo meat (think really tender jerky) + dried cranberries. Can’t get much simpler than that.
Not only are these bars tasty, but I’ve found them to be a great recovery food for hard 1-3 hour work-outs (tempo-runs or hills). The challenge is that this bar is so tasty that I just want to eat them all the time. As a result, I had institute a rule that I can only have them after hard workouts as a tasty reward.
They also have the coolest logo in the biz:
There as a whole ‘nother angle to these Tanka Bars. They are made on Pine Ridge, the Oglala Lakota Reservation in southwest South Dakota. I actually spent a week there in the summer of 2008 and learned about the rich culture but also local challenges first-hand. I could go into a whole thing now about how buying this bar is the right thing to do and should make you feel good. Maybe another another time, because this post is not about that. It’s about an incredible recovery food.
You should give it a try!
